Services

Services offered in Dr. MacLeod's practice.

Clinical Nutrition

Nutrition is the most fundamental form of medicine. Eating an optimal diet helps to prevent a wide variety of diseases, including diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Specific foods which may otherwise be considered “healthy” can also cause problems for people with sensitivities to those foods. Naturopathic doctors are trained extensively in optimal nutrition, with an emphasis on nutrition for specific health conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, Chron’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diabetes and cancer.

Lab Testing

Laboratory testing is an essential tool for assessing metabolism, digestive health, toxicity, nutrient levels and for the presence of chronic infections. At MacLeod Naturopathic we use lab tests to make determinations about the health of our patients and to help guide treatment for best results.

IV Therapy

IV therapy can be used to treat many health conditions. An IV nutrient formula tailored to the individual provides the required minerals, vitamins and cofactors to correct deficiencies, restore balance and affect metabolic change. IV therapy uses a combination of specific nutrients to stimulate optimal energy maintenance and metabolism. IV nutrient formulas are targeted at helping specific pathways and processes in the body to function at their best.

Chelation Therapy

The word chelation is derived from the Greek word for “claw”. Chelating agents function like a claw by surrounding, grabbing and mobilizing certain metals which otherwise would remain stuck within tissues of the body. Once mobilized these metals can be safely excreted. The chelation agent used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease is ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA). Intravenous EDTA has been used for over 40 years in North America to treat cardiovascular disease. The safety and effectiveness of EDTA in the treatment of cardiovascular disease has been excellent.

Platelet-Rich Plasma

A platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection is used to treat many painful conditions including osteoarthritis, tendinitis, plantar fasciitis and ligament injuries. PRP utilizes components of a person’s own blood to treat osteoarthritis, offering significant benefits in pain reduction, mobility and stiffness. PRP injections contain a high concentration of growth factors, which promote tissue repair and joint cartilage integrity. Studies have shown PRP treatment to be effective and safe, with reduced pain and improved mobility in patients with osteoarthritis.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is an injection of a concentrated dextrose (sugar) solution which triggers a regenerative response at the site of an injury or degeneration. Prolotherapy is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis which can give years of symptom relief. The success rate of prolotherapy for osteoarthritis is 85%. Growth factors are released within the joint after a prolotherapy injection, initiating the repair process. The safety of prolotherapy is excellent. Mild discomfort is possible for 1-7 days post-treatment.

Ozone Therapy

The ozone molecule is composed of three oxygen atoms bound together (O=O=O) and is written in short form as O3. The “oxygen” which we breathe and require for cellular functioning is actually two oxygen atoms bound together (O=O), written as O2. Ozone is a less stable form of oxygen than the O2 form of oxygen which we breathe on a daily basis and as a result, degrades fairly quickly. The medical applications of ozone are due to this instability and the reactions which take place when it breaks down.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is an ancient system of medicine which has been used by many civilizations throughout history, including the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. Recent research has also helped to support the classic uses of herbs in the treatment of a variety of conditions, including migraines, nausea, anxiety and many more. Naturopathic doctors are trained extensively in the practical application of herbal medicines and in recognizing possible herb/drug interactions which have the potential of causing harm.

Neural Prolotherapy

Neural prolotherapy is a treatment for pain which uses shallow injections of a 5% dextrose (sugar) solution into the surrounding area of an inflamed nerve. The goal of the treatment is to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain of the affected nerve. This treatment was originated by Dr. John Lyftogt MD of New Zealand in an attempt to remedy his own Achilles tendinitis. Following his recovery, Dr. Lyftogt has since gone on to a career of teaching neural prolotherapy internationally.

Prolozone

Prolozone therapy is an injection treatment for acute and chronic painful conditions. Prolozone is used to treat a variety of painful conditions from osteoarthritis, to tendonitis, to plantar fasciitis. This treatment involves the injection of a natural anti-inflammatory combination directly into an affected joint. The main active ingredient of the injection is an oxygen/ozone gas mixture. The painful conditions which prolozone helps most are chronic degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and degenerative joint disease.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment method which has developed as an integral component of Traditional Chinese Medicine over 2000 years ago. Acupuncture can be used to treat many health conditions effectively, including migraines, tension headaches, back pain, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis and it also aides in quitting smoking and weight loss. Dr. MacLeod utilizes both Traditional Chinese Medicine and trigger point release styles of acupuncture to best treat his patients.

Myers Cocktail

The Myers’ Cocktail, is a combination of Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Vitamin C, magnesium and calcium administered intravenously. The Myers’ Cocktail was first performed by Dr. John Myers MD and later championed by Dr. Alan Gaby MD after Myers’ death in 1984. The Myers’ Cocktail works by increasing the blood concentration of several essential vitamins and minerals beyond that which can be achieved when supplementing orally. For example, Vitamin C given intravenously has been found to reach blood concentrations more than 50 times greater than what can be achieved when given orally.

Mistletoe Therapy

Mistletoe (Latin name: Viscum album) is a plant which grows parasitically on pine, oak, elm and apple trees, among many others. There are hundreds of species of mistletoe growing throughout the world. European mistletoe was first described at length for medicinal use 2000 years ago. Modern research on mistletoe for the treatment of cancer began in Germany in the 1950s and has exploded over the past few decades. Mistletoe is not a cure for cancer, however it does have an inhibitory effect on cancer cells and a stimulating effect on the immune system of a person with cancer.

Microcurrent Therapy

Microcurrent therapy employs a low amplitude of electricity which is closely in line with the electrical activity of the cells of the body. Microcurrent has a broad therapeutic potential, encouraging healing and improving pain across many health conditions. Pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, tennis elbow, sinus headaches, back pain and several skin problems can all be helped with microcurrent treatment. Microcurrent is a very safe treatment that has been researched and used clinically for over 25 years.
