Migraines are a common type of headache characterized by a pulsing or throbbing sensation and often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are a very common problem, affecting 12% of the population of the USA, including 17% of women and 6% of men each year1. Migraines are the second most common cause of disability, next to low back pain, worldwide2.
This article will provide an overview of migraines, including their causes, symptoms, diagnosis, conventional treatment, naturopathic treatment and prevention.
Causes of Migraines
The exact underlying cause of migraines is not yet known, but they are believed to be related to changes in brain activity. People can have migraine triggers, such as certain foods, stress and changes in sleep, that can set off or worsen a migraine. Genetics may also play a role, as migraines tend to run in families.
Hormonal changes in women, such as those that occur during menopause and regular menstrual cycles, can also play a role in triggering migraines. A medical condition known as “rebound headache” can also occur as a result of taking too many migraine medications. Other potential triggers include changes in weather, bright lights, strong smells, and alcohol or caffeinated beverages.
Symptoms of Migraines
The primary symptom of a migraine is a severe headache that usually starts as a dull ache and builds up to a throbbing or pulsing sensation on one side of the head. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and temporary vision changes such as blurred vision or blind spots. Some people may also experience aura, which is a sensation of flashing lights or zigzag patterns.
Generally, the headache phase of a migraine lasts between 4-72 hours if untreated3. Other symptoms may last a few days. Some people may experience only mild symptoms while others may experience more severe symptoms and prolonged periods of pain and discomfort.
Most migraine sufferers (76%) report having triggers that will set off a migraine4. Table 1 shows the frequency of specific migraine triggers.

Diagnosis Of Migraine
Diagnosis of a migraine is usually made based on a the patient’s symptoms and the results of a physical exam. During the exam, the doctor will assess the patient’s medical history, do a neurological exam, and do an examination of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. In some cases an MRI, CT scan or other diagnostic tests may be ordered to rule out other conditions such as a brain tumor, stroke or an infection.
You might also be tested for other conditions such as food sensitivities, hormonal fluctuations and vitamin deficiencies which can cause or exacerbate headaches in some cases.
Treatments for Migraines
There is no cure for migraines, but there are several treatments available that can help reduce the severity and frequency of a migraine attack. Conventional medical treatments include pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or sumatriptan. These medications can help ease the headache phase of a migraine and reduce the intensity or duration of symptoms.
Naturopathic Treatment Of Migraine
In addition to medications, lifestyle changes can also help to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. These include getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, reducing stress and avoiding known triggers.
Acupuncture has been found in a large-scale review study to reduce to frequency and intensity of migraine attacks5. In practice I have seen excellent results with acupuncture for managing the pain and disability associated with migraines.
The Myers cocktail is another useful tool in preventing and managing migraines. Two of the ingredients of the Myers’ cocktail have been independently shown to be helpful in reducing frequency and intensity of migraines: magnesium and specific B vitamins6-8. Using the intravenous route for these nutrients leads to higher blood concentration and rapid nutrient repletion. This combination can help to head off the symptoms of a migraine quickly in many cases.
There are also several natural health products including vitamin, mineral and herbal medicines which limit the intensity and frequency of migraines. There is a good research basis for these treatments and I have seen excellent results in migraine patients over the years with these treatments.
Prevention of Migraines
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to preventing migraines but making certain lifestyle changes may help reduce their frequency and intensity. These include eating a balanced diet low in processed foods, avoiding potential triggers such as alcohol, getting enough sleep and managing stress. In some cases, nutritional and herbal supplements can be used long term to reduce migraine frequency and severity.
Certain medications, such as beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers, may also be used to prevent migraines. These medications help to reduce the number of migraine attacks and prevent them from becoming as severe. They are usually used in combination with lifestyle changes to help give the best results.
It is important to talk to a doctor before taking any preventive medications, as they can have side effects and may not be suitable for everyone.
