Specialized Testing
When standard testing hasn't provided answers, functional medicine testing investigates further. These advanced panels assess areas that standard testing typically does not include.

When Standard Testing Hasn't Given You Answers
Some patients have been through rounds of conventional testing, blood work, imaging, specialist referrals and still don't have answers. Being told "everything looks normal" when you clearly don't feel normal is one of the most frustrating experiences in healthcare.
The problem isn't that nothing is wrong. It's that standard testing looks at a limited set of markers through a lens designed to detect disease, not dysfunction. Functional medicine testing expands the investigation to include environmental exposures, metabolic pathways, chronic infections and genetic variants that conventional medicine rarely considers.
What Conventional Testing Often Misses
Heavy metals and environmental toxins accumulating over years
Organic acids reveal where energy production and detox stall
Lyme, EBV and other infections that evade standard testing
Genetic variants affecting detox, neurotransmitters and hormone clearance
Advanced Functional Testing Options
These tests are selected based on your history and symptoms, we recommend only what's clinically relevant.
Heavy Metal Assessment
Tests for mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium and other toxic metals. Chronic low-level exposure accumulates over decades from dental fillings, seafood, water and occupational sources.
Linked to: Fatigue, neurological symptoms, thyroid issues
Organic Acids Test (OAT)
A comprehensive metabolic snapshot measuring 75+ markers in urine. Evaluates energy production, neurotransmitter metabolism, detoxification capacity, yeast/bacterial overgrowth and nutritional status.
Best for: Fatigue, brain fog, mood issues, complex cases
Chronic Infection Panels
Testing for reactivated or chronic infections including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Lyme disease (Borrelia), co-infections and other stealth pathogens that drive fatigue and immune dysfunction.
Best for: Chronic fatigue, post-viral syndromes, joint pain
DUTCH Hormone Test
The most comprehensive hormone test available. Dried urine testing measures hormones and their metabolites, revealing how your body processes and clears hormones, not just levels.
Reveals: Hormone metabolism, cortisol pattern, methylation
Environmental Toxins
Screens for common environmental chemicals including pesticides, plasticizers (BPA/phthalates), volatile solvents and other toxins that disrupt hormones, immunity and neurological function.
Linked to: Hormonal disruption, fertility issues, fatigue
Methylation Panel
Evaluates methylation, a critical biochemical process involved in detoxification, DNA repair, neurotransmitter production and hormone metabolism. Includes genetic variants (MTHFR, COMT) and functional markers.
Impacts: Detox capacity, mood, cardiovascular risk
The Root-Cause Approach to Complex Cases
Functional medicine doesn't treat symptoms in isolation, it investigates why those symptoms exist. When a patient presents with fatigue, brain fog, joint pain and mood changes, conventional medicine might offer antidepressants, painkillers and a referral to a sleep clinic.
A functional approach asks: Is there a heavy metal burden? An undiagnosed chronic infection? A methylation issue affecting neurotransmitter production? A metabolic bottleneck in energy production? These are testable questions with actionable answers.
Specialized testing is not for everyone, and we don't recommend it without clinical justification. But for complex, multi-system cases that haven't responded to conventional approaches, these tests often reveal the missing piece.
When to Consider Specialized Testing
- Standard blood work comes back "normal" but you still feel unwell
- Chronic fatigue that doesn't improve with rest or lifestyle changes
- Multiple symptoms across different body systems
- History of environmental or occupational exposure
- Post-viral symptoms that haven't resolved (long COVID, post-EBV)
- Family history of autoimmune, neurological or metabolic conditions
Signs That Deeper Testing May Help
Neurological & Cognitive
- Persistent brain fog or poor memory
- Numbness, tingling or neuropathy
- Mood swings, anxiety or depression
- Difficulty concentrating
- Headaches or migraines
Systemic & Physical
- Chronic fatigue unresponsive to treatment
- Joint and muscle pain without clear cause
- Chemical sensitivities or medication reactions
- Hormonal issues despite standard treatment
- Recurrent infections or immune dysfunction
- Symptoms that started after an illness or exposure
Accessing Advanced Testing in Nova Scotia
Functional medicine testing is not available through Nova Scotia's public healthcare system. These specialized panels require laboratories that go beyond standard hospital testing, and that's by design. They investigate root causes that conventional testing wasn't built to find.
- Heavy metal testing through MSI is extremely limited and typically requires specialist referral
- Organic acids testing is not available through conventional channels in NS
- DUTCH hormone testing provides detail that blood and saliva tests cannot match
- Lyme disease testing through standard labs uses methodology with known limitations
Through our practice, you can access these advanced tests directly, without specialist referrals or long waitlists. Results are interpreted in the context of your full clinical picture, and we develop treatment plans that address root causes, not just manage symptoms.
Getting Started
Specialized testing is recommended based on your individual case. During your initial consultation, we'll review your history and symptoms to determine which tests, if any, are most likely to provide useful answers. Most extended health insurance plans cover naturopathic consultations.
Book OnlineFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need all of these tests?
No. Specialized testing is selected based on your individual case. Most patients need only one or two of these panels. During your consultation, we'll review your symptoms, history and any previous testing to determine which tests are most likely to provide useful clinical information. We never recommend tests without clear clinical justification.
How much do specialized tests cost?
Costs vary depending on the test. Basic panels may start around $200–300, while comprehensive tests like the DUTCH or organic acids panel can range from $350–500. We're always transparent about costs before ordering and will discuss which tests offer the best value for your specific situation. Some extended health plans provide partial coverage for laboratory testing.
Are these tests scientifically valid?
Yes. We use tests from accredited, CLIA-certified laboratories that meet rigorous quality standards. The organic acids test, DUTCH hormone panel and GI-MAP, for example, are used by thousands of practitioners worldwide and supported by peer-reviewed research. We prioritize tests with strong clinical evidence and proven utility.
Should I start with basic blood work or specialized testing?
In most cases, we start with comprehensive basic blood work (wellness panel, nutrients, thyroid) before moving to specialized testing. This layered approach ensures we're not over-testing and that we catch common issues first. If your basic work is unremarkable but symptoms persist, specialized testing becomes the logical next step.
Can you work with my existing healthcare team?
Absolutely. Collaborative care leads to better outcomes. If you have a family doctor, specialist or other healthcare providers, we're happy to share results and coordinate care. Many patients use our specialized testing to complement their conventional medical care, and we work alongside your existing providers, not in place of them.
