Why Routine Blood Work Isn't Enough

Annual blood work, when you can get it, typically includes only the basics: CBC and maybe a fasting glucose. But chronic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver develop silently for years before standard tests flag a problem.

By the time your fasting glucose is flagged as "high," insulin resistance has likely been building for a decade. By the time your cholesterol is concerning, arterial changes may already be underway. Proactive, comprehensive screening catches these trends early, when lifestyle changes and natural interventions are most effective.

What Standard Screening Misses

Early insulin resistance

Fasting glucose stays normal until the problem is advanced

Silent inflammation

hs-CRP reveals cardiovascular and systemic inflammation risk

Liver stress

Fatty liver disease is often undetected until significant damage

Optimal vs. normal ranges

"Normal" results may still indicate early dysfunction

The Comprehensive Wellness Panel

A thorough baseline that screens for the most common, and most preventable, health conditions.

CBC

Complete Blood Count

Your blood cell overview: red cells, white cells and platelets. Screens for anemia, infection, immune function and blood disorders.

Key markers: Hemoglobin, WBC, RBC, MCV, platelets
What we look for: Patterns suggesting B12, iron or folate issues
CMP

Metabolic Panel

Kidney function, electrolytes and protein levels. Includes sodium, potassium, creatinine, eGFR and total protein, your body's internal chemistry snapshot.

Key markers: Creatinine, eGFR, electrolytes
What we look for: Early kidney stress, dehydration patterns
Lipid

Lipid Panel

Cardiovascular risk markers including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. We also calculate important ratios that standard reports often omit.

Key markers: Total-C, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides
Key ratio: TG:HDL ratio (insulin resistance indicator)
A1C

Blood Sugar (HbA1c)

HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over 3 months, far more useful than a single fasting glucose. It catches pre-diabetes years before fasting glucose rises.

Standard range: <6.5% (diabetes cutoff)
Optimal range: 4.8–5.3%
LFT

Liver Function

AST, ALT, GGT and bilirubin assess liver health. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects an estimated 25% of Canadians, often without any symptoms.

Key markers: ALT, AST, GGT, Bilirubin
What we look for: Ratios indicating fatty liver or toxin burden
CRP

Inflammation (hs-CRP)

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein measures systemic inflammation, an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and autoimmune conditions.

Standard range: <10 mg/L
Optimal range: <1.0 mg/L

Your Health Shouldn't Depend on Having a Family Doctor

With over 148,000 Nova Scotians on the family doctor waitlist and wait times stretching years into the future, many people have gone without routine blood work for far too long. Conditions that could have been caught early are being diagnosed late, when intervention is harder and outcomes are worse.

Even those with family physicians often find that annual blood work covers only the bare minimum. Markers like HbA1c, hs-CRP and liver enzymes are frequently skipped unless there's already a known problem, defeating the purpose of preventive screening.

Comprehensive wellness blood work gives you a clear, actionable picture of your health right now and a baseline to track changes over time.

Blood Work Access in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia's healthcare system is under significant strain. With over 148,000 residents on the family doctor waitlist, many people simply cannot access routine blood work through conventional channels. Even those with a family doctor often face:

  • Minimal annual panels that only check the basics
  • Reluctance to order "extra" markers like HbA1c or hs-CRP without existing diagnosis
  • Long wait times between appointments, making proactive screening difficult
  • No access to functional interpretation using optimal ranges

Through our practice, you can access comprehensive wellness blood work without a family doctor requisition. Results are reviewed in detail using optimal functional ranges, and we create actionable health plans based on your findings, not just "everything looks normal."

Getting Started

Comprehensive wellness blood work includes CBC, metabolic panel, lipid panel, HbA1c, liver function and hs-CRP inflammation markers. Most extended health insurance plans cover naturopathic consultations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get blood work without a family doctor?

Yes. As a naturopathic doctor, I can order comprehensive blood work directly. You don't need a family doctor referral or requisition to access testing through our practice.

Is wellness blood work covered by MSI?

Testing ordered through a naturopathic doctor is not covered by MSI. However, many extended health plans cover naturopathic services including consultations. The lab testing itself is an out-of-pocket expense, but provides access to a far more comprehensive panel than what's typically available through conventional channels.

Do I need to fast before blood work?

Yes, a 10–12 hour fast is recommended for the most accurate lipid and blood sugar results. Water and black coffee are fine. We recommend booking morning blood draws for convenience. Specific instructions will be provided when you book.

How often should I get wellness blood work?

For most adults, annual comprehensive blood work is ideal. If we identify areas that need attention, we may retest specific markers at 3–6 month intervals to track progress. Those with known risk factors or active health concerns may benefit from more frequent monitoring.

Will you share results with my family doctor?

Absolutely. If you have a family doctor and would like your results shared, we're happy to provide a copy. Collaborative care leads to better outcomes, and we work alongside your existing healthcare providers, not in place of them.
